NYPD Stop and Frisk

The NYPD’s practice of stop and frisk was found unconstitutional in the Floyd et. al. vs. City of New York class action lawsuit. Living in a more cosmopolitan society requires that we be more conscious of how institutions in our societies might “otherize“ people. The disparities in the racial makeup of the NYPD’s stop and frisk program illuminates one of these problematic processes of otherization.

This project’s visualizations are fairly straight forward. The challenges of this project came primarily from the cleaning of the original data set. The NYPD reports on stop and frisks are actually quite detailed and extensive. Yet it was necessary to put in the effort to sort out the most relevant data in order to translate obtuse reports into a readily consumable visualization.
